Op 11 augustus 1973 legde DJ Kool Herc in een buurthuis aan Sedgwick Avenue de basis voor wat zou uitgroeien tot een wereldwijde cultuur.

Door de breaks van funk- en soulplaten naadloos in elkaar te laten overlopen, ontstond een nieuwe muzikale taal die generaties zou vormen: hiphop. In 2026 bestaat het genre 53 jaar, en NPO BLEND viert die mijlpaal met een speciale lijst die de ontwikkeling, invloed en blijvende kracht van hiphop laat zien.
